Hand on Review: Sony Vario-Tessar T* E 16-70mm f/4 ZA OSS Lens (SEL1670Z)

There are lenses that we all lust for and then there are lenses that we should all have, lenses that make sense on our cameras, the Sony Vario-Tessar T* E 16-70mm f/4 ZA OSS is a lens that just makes sense not to mention a mouth full for a names.

Sony Vario-Tessar T* E 16-70mm f/4 ZA OSS [SEL1670Z] is one of the Zeiss lenses from the Sony stable, as with most Zeiss lenses it is graded amongst the higher quality lenses and it shows as soon as you pick it up, it has a quality feel and a good weight to it, once on the Sony Alpha NEX-6 it feels right at home but I found it a bit off balance at times, it feels heavier than the camera, however it is not a major issue as it has a good grip.

The zoom range being in the Goldilocks zone doesn’t hurt a bit; with the 1.5 crop factor it becomes a useful 24-105mm f/4. Add to that the superior Zeiss glass and the sharpness that comes with it, it suddenly becomes a tempting well rounded package.

It is armed with the usual array of functions found in most e-mount lenses such as optical stabilization, endless focus ring, zoom ring, cap, a useful hood and a 55mm filter thread. If I had to mention a problem, it would be that it uses a telescopic lens system to save space, which in my experience with other lenses, can cause zoom creep if it gets too loose.  It weight 322g with the hood, bringing the NEX-6 and lens to 662g which in comparison to an equivalent DSLR (at 2.3kg) with the same lens quality and length makes it feather light.

Overall, this lens gets my stamp status and a with a 4/5 star rating.

Pros
  • Solid feel
  • Sharp
  • Good color reproduction
  • Good zoom range
    (24-105mm Equivalent)
  • f/4 aperture
Cons
  • Expansive
  • Feels a little off balance
  • Auto-Focus speed may be slow
    in some conditions (NEX-6)
Note: This was tested with the SONY Alpha NEX-6, I since have been using this lens with the new 24.3 megapixel SONY Alpha 6000 and found the Auto-Focus far more accurate with a noticeable increased speed.
